Lhotse Expedition

  • Lhotse Expedition Nepal Outdoor Himalayan Treks 1

Mt Lhotse (8516m)  is the most immediate 8000 meter-plus neighbor of Mount Everest, separated by a pass (South Col). Lhotse’s southern face, perhaps the largest in the world, is a towering wall of glittering ice and snow that rises for more than 3 kilometers with the width of 2.25 kilometers. From most of the places in Khumbu, this stupendous wall often outshines the majesty of Mount Everest itself, which seems to be shyly poking its crown from behind the extended massif. If you have enough time at your disposal, you can combine all the attractive destinations of Everest region treks. For this you should  take minor detours either during the approach or the return: in rewards, you will accumulate the experiences of world’s most famous trekking trails and a notable mountaineering success. No other sceneries on the earth will surpass the mountain panorama from different vantage points. Similarly, the warm hospitality of the friendly Sherpas in the region, their ways of life, their religion and monasteries will leave lasting, unforgettable memories for your entire lifetime.

It is also possible to combine Lhotse Expedition with Everest Expedition because the South Col separating them reaches 8000 meters and Mount Lhotse rises only 610 meters above it. In the past, a few enthusiastic, hardy mountaineers have managed to kiss the summits of Everest and Lhotse within a span of 24 hours. From the time of its first ascent in 1956 A. D., more than one and half a dozen expeditions have successfully ascended the peak.

Although the southern wall of the mountain looks very tempting, very inviting, the established route to the main Lhotse summit, the westernmost in the Lhotse massif, follows its north-western face. There have been attempts to overcome the challenge of southern face as well, but they have met mostly with failures and fatalities.
